More rapid withdrawal of US troops after Afghan Karzai met President Obama in Washington DC.

Karzai and ObamaWASHINGTON — President Obama, eager to turn the page after more than a decade of war, said Friday that beginning this spring American forces would play only a supporting role in Afghanistan, which opens the way for a more rapid withdrawal of the troops.

After the final withdrawal, the remaining US forces would be narrowly focused on advising and training Afghan troops and hunting down the remnants of Al Qaeda.

President Karzai met with U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta last month before these Washington talks, which are expected to include the breadth of U.S-Afghan relations beyond next year’s exit of most of the remaining 60,000 U.S. troops there, and the current status of the negotiations with the Taliban.
