WMD: European Union look for alternatives to Assad regime in Syria, but still concerned with use of chemical weapons.

Syria and the end of the Assad Regime.

The European Union EU is concerned about threats of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. The Assad regime threatened with the deployment of chemical weapons  in the event of a “foreign aggression” . “The EU is seriously concerned about the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria”, said the EU foreign ministers on Monday at a Summit in Brussels. The ministers warned of a further militarization of the conflict.

The Assad leadership in Damascus said that  they would “never” use chemical weapons “against our own citizens” , but “only in the event of foreign aggression,” said the spokesman for the Syrian Foreign Ministry, Jihad Makdessi, on Monday in Damascus.

This threat of Assad shows a growing possibility that the Assad regime falls in the near term. Assad is now supported only by his friends within the Syrian military, and some support from Iran and the lebanese Hezbollah. This is not enough to keep Assad in power, and the various parties to the conflict are studying possible solutions to Syria after the fall of Assad.
